Breathe with Dryden Goodwin and Effie Coe

Posted on 28.10.2011

Invisible Dust artist Effie Coe was part of the EXHALE scientist team in 2010/11 and visit 20 East London Primary Schools each year to examine how air pollution is affecting young children. As part of each workshop the children participate in Coe’s ink breath drawing activities, which are inspired by ‘Breathe’, enabling pupils to understand the science of breathing.

Along with artist talks for hospital staff and children’s art and poetry with celebrated poet Michael Rosen at the Evelina School and Coe’s own animation, the children’s works went on display in an exhibition at St Thomas’ Hospital.

Through the Marshall Scholar Sasha Englemann, Invisible Dust has also invited East London school children for an educational evening at the site of the artwork on October 9th.  Students experienced ‘Breathe‘ and discussed the work with Dryden Goodwin and Alice Sharp.  The class was invited to engage with the work digitally, by recording and submitting videos and images to an online archive of impressions.

Breathe‘ is part of ‘Invisible Breath’, a series of artists commissions by Dryden Goodwin, HeHe and Faisal Abdu’Allah to UK exploring air pollution and breathing air.Breathe is produced by Invisible Dust curated by Alice Sharp and is supported The Wellcome Trust, Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity and Arts Council England.
