We Breathe, Together: A Day of Community Air Action and Exploration

Posted on 28.07.2022

A family-friendly day packed full of creative workshops, art installations and talks exploring our air, our health and our environment. Delivered in partnership with our amazing hosts – the Art Fund Museum of the Year 2022 winning Horniman Museum and Gardens

Take a look back at what happened

From building (and racing!) your own hydrogen car, learning the skills to create a 2D stop motion ‘clean air’ animation, co-designing immersive climate adventures and ‘ink breath’ painting, to meeting incredible local campaigners in our ‘clean air village’ and listening to expert talks, this is a day for anyone who dreams of a clean air future – and seeks the tools to take action.

‘We Breathe, Together’ extends the conversation around Breathe:2022 by Dryden Goodwin, the ambitious multi-site artwork produced by Invisible Dust. Breathe:2022 combines over 1,000 new drawings, appearing as large-scale still and moving images on sites close to the heavily polluted South Circular Road from May – December 2022.

Relating to the tragic death of Ella Adoo-Kissi-Debrah and the growing battle for climate justice, Breathe:2022 and its wider engagement programme connects the global health emergency of air pollution to the daily lives of local Lewisham residents and activists.

Through creative provocations and interactions ‘Breathe:2022’ and ‘We Breathe, Together’ ask us to stay with the claustrophobia of ‘fighting for breath’ but also begin to look upwards and outwards, towards the power of community action and a clean air future for all.

As part of the day you can also immerse yourself in ‘Airborne’ – artist Sarah Stirk’s audio-visual installation that seeks to make the invisible threat of pollution visible.

‘We Breathe, Together’ is programmed by Invisible Dust for We Are Lewisham, London Borough of Culture 2022 with the support of Arts Council England and Mayor of London. ‘Breathe:2022’ by Dryden Goodwin was originally commissioned by the Albany and produced by Invisible Dust and presented as part of We Are Lewisham. We Are Lewisham is presented by Lewisham Council and the Albany as part of the Mayor’s London Borough of Culture 2022.
