Elizabeth Price
Elizabeth Price’s large-scale video installation, SUNLIGHT is the artist’s first solo exhibition in a public gallery since winning the Turner Prize in 2012. SUNLIGHT was also an inaugural exhibition at Focal Point Gallery, Southend-on-Sea. SUNLIGHT.
SUNLIGHT draws on historic slide imagery of the Sun and was developed as part of Elizabeth Price’s Invisible Dust residency with the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL). Elizabeth Price is the first ever artist in residence with RAL with space scientist Dr Hugh Mortimer supported by the Leverhulme Trust. Price’s residency is focusing on solar imagery and an archive of photographs scientists have taken of the sun since 1900.
Elizabeth Price’s practice explores art and design objects, social history artifacts, archives and administrative paraphernalia. Price creates art works, such as archives and collections, and in response to these broad collections develops new narratives and taxonomies. This work usually incorporates a diverse range of media including photography, high definition video, live action, motion graphics, animation and sound. Price studied Fine Art at the Ruskin School of Art, Oxford University and at the Royal College of Art.
In November 2012 Elizabeth Price was one of five artist recipients of the Paul Hamlyn ‘Awards for Artists Programme’ of £50,000 for 3 years.
In December 2012 she won the Turner Prize for her exhibition at the BALTIC Newcastle.
“I was very impressed by the sexy, fetishistic film Elizabeth Price showed at the most recent British Art Show, with its encounters with objects and surfaces and the way the camera eroticises her subjects, including a vinyl LP, kitsch pottery figurines and an egg whisk. Her seductive art is sculpture by other means, and you’re never sure whether her work is critique or love affair. Maybe it is both. Like a lot of artists now, Price seems to me to be revisiting modernism and its legacy”. Adrian Searle, Guardian, 1st May 2012.
