Yesterday was an exciting and promising day for green energy: the world’s largest offshore windfarm opened 12km off Foreness Point in Thanet, Kent. Built by the Swedish energy giant Vattenfall, Thanet farm will be able to produce 300MW of electricity from 100 turbines – enough to power over 20,000 homes.
Due to the windy conditions of the UK, the UK wind market is the most promising. RenewableUK, the wind industry trade body, argues that on average a wind turbine in the UK generates 50% more electricity than the same wind turbine in Germany. However, as the Guardian points out, Germany already has a total of 21,315 wind turbines installed compared to little over 3,000 in the UK.
