Planet Under Pressure Conference opens this week

22/03/2012

Invisible Dust is taking part in Planet under Pressure 2012 a four day conference with plenary sessions involving international figureheads. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will address the conference which aims to provide scientific leadership towards the 2012 UN Rio +20 conference in June 2012. Attendees include experts in the field of science, sustainability and nature aiming to create a platform for positive change in our world.

This is an exciting opportunity for the UK to host this vital four-day conference which will comprise of varied discussions about solutions to help sustain our planet and seek to culminate in a discussion of the policy, investment and research needed for effective management of the planet’s increasingly scarce resources.

Planet Under Pressure 2012 will take place at the new London International Convention Centre (ICC) at Excel between 26th – 29th March 2012.

Please ask someone at the PUP conference to comment on the ‘global predicament’ posed humanity on our watch by the unbridled growth worldwide of distinctly human overproduction, overconsumption and overpopulation activities we can see overspreading the surface of Earth. What Andy Revkin describes as “humanity’s growth spurt” appears to minimize, even trivialize, a grave situation that is becoming harder and harder to acknowledge, address and overcome because human global overgrowth activities are overwhelming the finite physical resources and frangible ecology of the celestial orb we call our planetary home. The colossal presence of humankind on Earth in our time is much more formidable and fearsome than some sort of adolescent growth spurt. To describe the explosion of absolute global population numbers in such terms is jejeune and represents a subtle form of denial of what primarily threatens future human well being and environmental health.

    Thank you,

If we will acknowledge “human population pressures”, we are going to make a difference. Thanks for all you are doing. It is so refreshing to be among people who are seeking knowledge of human population dynamics/overpopulation, rather than obstructing that effort or else plainly, consciously and deliberately playing stupid in a ‘rear-guard’ defense of a catastrophe-in-the-making status quo.

Somehow we have to grasp much more adequately the sum and substance of our distinctly human nature, with special attention given to improving our ‘reality orientation’ with regard to such vital issues as human population dynamics. Although relatively small in number, evolutionary biologists and scientists in other fields of research understand what the best available science indicates to us about the skyrocketing growth of absolute global human population numbers in our time.Research of outstanding scientists indicate that the population dynamics of the human species is essentially similar to, not different from, the population dynamics of other species. We have uncontested, apparently unforeseen and unfortunately unwelcome scientific evidence regarding the ‘placement’ of the human species within the order of living things that is everywhere denied; whereas, preternatural theories (eg, Demographic Transition Theory), political ideologies (eg, Conservatism and Liberalism) and economic theologies (eg, neoclassical economics) are widely shared and consensually validated as somehow supported by science. To elect to extol the virtue of ideas that have been refuted by scientific research (evidence which is consciously and deliberately ignored, avoided and denied) cannot be construed as the right thing to do. Even though ‘political correctness’ is predominant and accepted as real, when theory, ideology and theology are directly contradicted by science, then science must be shared. Scientific knowledge must prevail over theory, ideology and theology.
